Intertwining Spirit

Heredity
I am the familiar face;
Flesh perishes, I live on,
Projecting trait and trace
Through time to times anon,
And leaping from place to place
Over oblivion.
The years-heired feature that can
In curve, in voice and eye
Despise the human span
Of durance - that is I;
The eternal thing in man,
That heeds no call to die.
... Thomas Hardy
Through my parents and my children
I saw that there is a thread that transcends
the boundaries of our individual lives,
that stretches across generations to pasts
we will never know and a future we can
barely imagine. I understood finally,
that we are here (and that we are what we
are) because of decisions made and dreams
pursued by distant ancestors whose names
I didn't even know.
