Global Warming ~ Al Gore
Greetings,
Maria and I just watched "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore", our former Vice-President, who has put into words on film all of the pertinent information about Global Warming anyone could want to know. The film clearly demonstrates that there is no question any longer that Global Warming is already a fact. The only question left is when will its effects become devastating to the human race. From what we saw, its only a matter of time. And it may already be happening to the point that our lives will be changing very soon unless we do something about it NOW.
The movie clearly proved that there have been over 640 peer reviewed articles that connect human activities with Global Warming. No peer reviewed articles dispute that claim. Only news articles have said that there may be some question about the connection. Also, members of the most recent governmental administration have been found to have fraudulently edited various environmental reports in order to give rise to questions as to whether there really is Global Warming or not. The day after he was Al Gore was fired, he went to work for Exxon Mobil Corporation. Yet the people of America went ahead and re-elected the same administration to a second term in office.
That same administration has refused to enter into the Kyoto Agreement which would have limited carbon dioxide emissions in all nations. Every other nation has entered into the agreement other than the US and Australia. And they did it based upon the idea that there would be too many economic ramifications if we agreed to it. However, Gore proved that those nations that did enter into the agreement actually have auto manufacturers that are in much better shape than General Motors and Ford. Toyota, Honda and others are all involved in greater mileage than GM or Ford and all are doing better than them. More than that, Japan, Europe and even China have greater mileage requirements than those imposed by the US. That means that we can't even sell our vehicles in China because they don't meet the mileage standards there. So, the government's claim that we can't enter into such an agreement is misleading and fraudulent.
Gore demonstrated that if the glaciers in Greenland melt completely the oceans could gain as much as 20 feet of depth. The same is true if Antarctica's glaciers should melt. Or if half of each of them should melt. That would result in the relocation of approximately 100 million people around the world. That could be devastating to the earth and the people and governments of the world.
From our perspective, if that happened, governments could fall, currencies could become unreliable and drought and famine could result as well as many natural disasters such as increased hurricanes, tornadoes and critical changes in climate. All of this will result in dramatic changes to our world as we know it and all of us who live on this earth.
We strongly urge you to buy the movie, rent it or borrow it from the library as soon as possible. It will change your life and how you live it. It will show you how and why you should and can change the way you live in this world so that you can have a positive effect upon changing what will otherwise be our future.
Don't forget that you can and do have an effect upon relieving the world of Global Warming. Remember that you can and will change the world with every step you take towards saving energy and changing your governmental representatives to those who agree with your stand.
If all this sounds political, IT'S NOT! It applies to both parties and all people. We prefer to see this as a moral issue because it effects everyone. And what those in power for the last thirty years have been doing is immoral. Its time for a major change. Its time to save our world. We can do it. But it takes dedication and commitment on a grass roots level. Start today and don't stop until you see results. We've already started and we're in it for the long run. We have a son who will be effected by Global Warming if we fail to do what needs to be done.
Here is a poem that I believe applies to what we each can do to help change Global Warming.
Just because there is little I can do,
does not mean that I will refuse to do it.
And even though it is little,
it still has an impact on the world.
Another classic saying from Abbey Hoffman back in the 60-70's was:
"Think globally, act locally."
Good advice.
~ What We Can All Do.
~ Some things we can do right now
~ to help change the situation:
- Buy as many florescent light bulbs for your home as you can afford. Full spectrum bulbs have the best light to most eyes. Or you can use light emitting diodes (LEDs) instead. This will reduce your electrical usage to the point that it will eliminate approximately 100 pounds of carbon dioxide per year per light bulb from the environment. Consider how many tons you can eliminate with a household full of bulbs. You can also save approximately $7.00 per bulb each year on energy costs.
- Change your thermostat to the type that automatically reduces the temperature in your home at night by 5 degrees while you sleep. Again, you'll save a lot of fuel each year and directly help the environment.
- Invest in renewable energy sources like solar power collectors or wind energy. If you produce more energy than you use, you can usually sell it back to your utility company.
- Invest in renewable flashlights (generator type) that use LEDs in them. They will save the environment by eliminating the use of disposable batteries.
- Buy a green machine. Which means buy a Toyota, Lexus or Honda hybrid car or any other brand that provides exceptional mileage (50+ Mpg) and low emissions.
- Buy Energy Star products including appliances and building materials. They will again help reduce your use of electricity and fuel. You can save as much as $50.00 per year on one Energy Star appliance and up to $400.00 per year on Energy Star rated heating unit.
- Use mass transit, car pool, bicycle or walk to work. Living closer to work will save energy and money.
Recycle bottles and cans that you use or find. By recycling one glass bottle, you actually save enough energy to operate a 100 watt light bulb for one year. Its amazing, isn't it!
- Join a food cooperative so that you can buy things that are not individually packaged. The plastic wrappings on items wastes a great deal of energy.
- Preserve water. Turn off the water as you brush your teeth. Turn it off as you wash your dishes. Use a large pot to wash dishes in and then rinse everything off in another pot or under the faucet at the same time. Use a water restrictor shower head in your shower and consider turning the shower off as you soap up and then rinse off afterward. These measures save water and save energy as a result.
- When you drive your car, don't accelerate at each stop sign or traffic light like you are running the quarter mile at the track. Go easy on the throttle and you’ll get better mileage. Your car will last longer too.
- Slow down while you drive. As you maintain the speed limit, you'll save a great deal on gas mileage. Maria has chosen to do this regularly and she regularly gets 51-55 miles to a gallon of gas. She drives a Toyota Prius and loves it. By the way, she gets home about five minutes after me when we leave work together and she's usually a lot more relaxed.
- Use air conditioning in your home only when you're there. It will take a few extra minutes for your home to cool down after you get home, but it will save a great deal of energy for you and the world.
- Shop online as much as possible. It will save you gas.
- When you do go shopping, plan your day so that you don't have to "back track" to get to places you want to go. Make up a plan in advance and "follow the dots" to all of your favorite retailers or restaurants. The same holds true when taking trips.
- If you are traveling any distance, travel during non-rush hour periods. You'll get better mileage when you don't have to stop and go in traffic. (Unless you own a Prius and then you get better mileage in traffic than on the open highway).
Make sure your car's tires are properly inflated or even a little over-inflated. It gives you better mileage and saves energy.
- Contact your state and federal representatives and senators and insist that they institute a solar energy policy that includes solar energy credits again and other responsible energy policies. If they are unresponsive, contact the opposing political party and help them elect someone who will respond to your demands.
Write the President of the United States a letter demanding that he immediately institutes an energy policy for the United States of America. Send copies to your Representatives and Senators. Send additional copies to the editors of your local papers and any other papers you read. Post your letter on as many blogs as you can find on the Net.
- Start your own blog on the Internet and write about all of the above suggestions and anything energy related. We are going to add it to our website at Centerforinnerhealing.com and tedrobinson.com.
- Turn off your stereo components and television at the plug by installing a switched outlet. It will save energy because otherwise the diodes and lights stay on and spend energy.
- Plant as many trees as you have room for on your property. It will help reduce carbon dioxide naturally.
- Keep your home thermostat at 60 degrees during the winter and wear more warm clothing. It will save energy.
- Keep your shades down in south facing windows during the summer and leave then open during the winter months. Both methods will save energy.
- Insulate all windows with bubble wrap and/or foam during nighttime hours in winter. Or use heavy drapes to eliminate air infiltration.
- Insulate all electrical outlets to stop air infiltration.
- Foam all holes in outside of building around doors and windows or any other gaps.
- Install Tyvek or any other house wrap to stop air infiltration. Make sure to tape all window and door openings and overlapping joints.
- Install weather stripping around all doors and windows to save energy.
